The Mitten: Story Sequencing & Flannel Board Cards

After reading the book, The Mitten, by Jan Brett, use these animal cards to teach your pre-k kids vocabulary, recall, and story sequencing. The cards can also be used for other activities and games, such as rhyming, beginning sounds, counting and more.

The Mitten Flannel Board Sequencing Cards

I recommend printing the cards on card stock paper and laminating them. Cut out each card. Use these cards on your flannel board by sticking a piece of Velcro on the back. Or, add a magnet to the back to use on a whiteboard or a magnet board (a cookie sheet works well).

How to Use The Mitten Cards

These printable story cards can be used in a variety of activities:

  • Have children sequence the animals in the order they came in the story.
  • Have children retell the story, using the cards as a visual cue.
  • Practice rhyming by placing each card on the board, and asking children to find which card rhymes with a word. For example, “What rhymes with habit?” [rabbit] “What rhymes with fowl?” [owl] “What rhymes with box?” [fox]
  • Practice beginning sounds by placing each card on the board, and asking children to find which card begins with a certain sound. For example, “Which animal begins with /h/?” [hedgehog]
  • Place a certain number of cards on the board and have children count how many animals.
  • Print two sets for a matching game or memory game.
  • Play an observation game by placing 4 of the animal cards on the board, then cover them with a piece of poster board while you take one card away. Remove the poster board and ask children which animal is missing.
