Little Red Hen Rhyming Game Printable

This Little Red Hen Rhyming Game Printable will help your pre-k students practice rhyming and give them exposure to this very important phonological awareness skill.

Little Red Hen: Printable Rhyming Game

This free printable is one piece of a large pack of Little Red Hen literacy and math activities from my shop. I hope you and your students enjoy the game! Check here for more free Fairy Tale activities!

This Little Red Hen Game comes in color and blackline and I’ve included the printable directions sheet for you.

How to Prepare the Little Red Hen Game

This game includes a rhyming mat and calling cards. Print out the calling cards, laminate if you choose, and cut out. Mix the cards up before the game so they will be in random order.

Print the rhyming mat (either the color or blackline version). Make one for each child in your group, laminate if you choose or slip in a page protector. These do not need to be cut out. Provide the children with something to cover the pictures, such as cubes or plastic chips.

How to Play the Little Red Hen Game

Give each child a mat and shuffle the calling cards. Draw a card and read it to the children. If you read, “What rhymes with truck?” the children should find the duck and cover it. Continue playing until all of the pictures are covered. Everyone “wins” the game at the same time.

This is how I play all bingo games and similar games. I don’t worry if kids copy off someone else. Pre-K is all about social learning, and they can learn by watching what others do, all while not feeling the stress of getting wrong answers. If a child doesn’t know what rhymes with truck, they will practice it as they play the game and watch others. If you need to, give them the answer. It’s not a test, it’s a learning process.

Another idea you can try: Cut the cards on the mat apart and give each child a set of the cards. Have them mix the cards, but spread them out on the table face up where they can see them all. As you call out a word, have the children find and turn the card over, and continue until all of the cards are face down.

Observational Assessment

While it’s not a test, you can still do observational assessments as the children play the game, without them even knowing what you’re doing. Print out one sheet of the calling cards, but don’t cut them out. As you play the game, if you see a child finding the correct answer on their own, write their initials by that rhyming word on the extra calling card sheet. Now you have observational notes!
