Valentine’s Day Carpet Clean Up

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Always being on your toes just to keep things from staining the carpet can spoil the romantic gestures of your special someone. To help you have a worry-free night, here are tips on how to remove some of the stains you might be on the watch for:

Rose Petals and Red Wine

1. Be sure to remove the sugar residue or it will cause a permanent stain.
2. Blot up what you can with an absorbent pad.
3. Apply a carpet stain remover. Or, flush the stain on area rugs or sponge carpeting with a solution of 1 quart warm water, 1/2 teaspoon liquid detergent, and 1 tablespoon white vinegar.
4. Blot with a clean pad, rinse well with water and blot up all the excess liquid with an absorbent pad.
5. Weigh down with a heavy object. When no more liquid is absorbed, allow to thoroughly air dry. Source: HowStuffWorks

Candles

1. Press a clean towel down over a wet wax spill. Do not rub the spot but continue to blot with the towel, moving to a clean section of fabric with each blot.
2. Scrape away hardened wax with a dull knife. Apply ice first to make the wax brittle and easier to remove. Chip away as much wax as possible without tearing or damaging the carpet fibers.
3. Cut a large piece from a brown paper bag. Choose a section without ink, writing or logos. Set the paper on top of the spilled wax.
4. Set your iron on the medium setting and let it warm up. Run the warm iron over the paper bag, moving the iron continuously.
5. Lift the bag to check on the stain. If wax remains, set a clean section of paper on top of the spot and continue to iron. You might need to repeat the process several times.
6. Sprinkle baking soda on any oily marks that remains once the wax is removed. Leave the baking soda in place for several hours before vacuuming the carpet. The stain should now be gone. Source: SFGate

Chocolate

1. Using a butter knife, scrape off any remaining chocolate residue from the affected area of the carpet. Be sure to perform this step slowly and carefully.
2. Using a paper towel or white clean cloth, use carpet stain remover to try and lift the chocolate stain.
3. If remnants of the chocolate stain are still visible after performing step 2, take ¼ teaspoon of white detergent and mix it with a cup of water that’s around room temperature.
4. Pour this water and detergent mixture directly onto the stain.
5. Begin blotting the carpet, working from the outer edge of the stain to the inner part. Doing so ensures you’re not spreading the chocolate stain further.
6. Leave the area to dry and the chocolate stain should disappear Source: Coit
