Deciding if a log home is right for you!
To build or not to build…that is the question. Is building a custom log home something you’ve been considering? Whether you build or buy, your home will be one of the biggest investments you will make, so you want to ensure that your home is right for you. We are not going to pretend and say that a custom log and timber home is perfect for everyone, because it isn’t. Here are some things to consider:
Types of Log and Timber Homes
Firstly, it’s important to understand that log homes have come a long way from the old rustic four-wall cabin tucked away in the woods. There are many different styles of log homes. The three main styles are full scribe, timber frame, and post and beam. Many of today’s designs combine elements from each style to create a new style known as a hybrid. If you don’t like the look and style of an entire home made of wood, post and beam and timber frame are great alternatives.
Read the full article here, difference between full scribe, timber frame and post and beam homes.
Owning Property
Like any custom home you will need to purchase land in order to build. Generally, you will want to build on property—preferably a more rural setting, and not in an established neighbourhood. A log home may look out of place amongst traditional homes. We aren’t saying that a log home can’t look great next to a more traditional house, because they are custom built, log homes that can be tailored to suit any neighbourhood. However, if you have a small lot it may create some challenges when bringing in cranes and other equipment required to build your home in already developed areas.
Cost to Build
The cost of a custom log and timber home can vary in price depending on size, location, species of timber and special features. On average you can expect to pay 20-30% more than traditional homes but the upside is it will be worth 30-40% more at time of resale. If you have a tight budget and limitations there are other options to consider when you are building such as considering a hybrid, prefab or kit home. But, if you are planning a long term home with character and an appeal that will stand the test of time, a log or timber home could be for you.
For a full breakdown on cost check out our article How Much Do Log Homes Cost?
Maintaining Your Home
There is no doubt about it, homes require maintenance and a log home is no different. If you have exterior logs they will need to be checked for rot and cracks that may occur over time. The south- and north-facing exterior walls require different treatment with preservatives. With a full scribe home settling occurs within the first few years requiring the windows and doors needing to be checked. Log homes can withstand anything Mother Nature throws at them and will stay strong and secure if you maintain them. If you ignore maintenance your home will continue to stand, but it will definitely look weathered so upkeep is important for the health of the logs.
For more information on log home maintenance check our article on Protecting Your Home from Dry rot.
To sum it all up, if you are looking for a home with character and unique appeal unlike the traditional box homes that you can find in any neighbourhood, a log and timber home may be the perfect home for you.

3 Things You Should Know About Home Security Cameras
Choosing the right home security cameras can be confusing with hundreds of options to choose from but before you make a choice, here are some important things you should know about home security cameras, including: types, features and professional consultation.
Below are 3 things you should know about home security cameras:
Types
There is a wide variety of security cameras, and each one serves a different purpose. From fixed cameras to pan and tilt cameras, night vision cameras to motion detection cameras, there are security cameras for nearly every scenario.

3 Causes of False Alarms
Although most false alarms are blamed on faulty equipment, the most likely cause of a false alarm may also include: power problems, corrosion and damage to wiring and outdated or old equipment.
Below are 3 causes of false alarms:
Power problems
Your alarm system will warn you when the system batteries become weak. Changing the system batteries on a regular basis can help prevent a false alarm. You’ll be happy to know that many wireless home security systems are outfitted with batteries that can last up to five years. Source: Safewise
Corrosion and Damage to Wiring
Certain areas are especially prone to corrosion. These will generally be in coastal areas, but may also include certain industrial areas.
– Corrosion causes increased resistance on circuit wires and will be most obvious on circuits with perimeter detection devices (vibration detectors, magnetic contacts, foil, tension switches, etc.), but will also have a substantial affect on electronic devices.
– Damage to wiring may be caused by virtually anything. Visually check wires or detectors near doors and windows, in passageways and high traffic areas or where boxes and goods are stacked against walls, etc. Rats love the PVC covering on wires and will generally attack cables in ceiling spaces, cupboards and other out-of-the-way places. Source: Property24
Outdated or Old Equipment
If it’s been awhile since your security system was installed and you’re experiencing a lot of false alarms, your equipment may need to be replaced. Here are just 2 types of older security equipment that can cause false alarms.
- Old ionization smoke detector
Ionization is an old smoke detector technology that’s not as reliable as newer photoelectric detectorsand more susceptible to false alarms. Yet this type of detector is common in homes that were built 12-15 years ago (they were built with them installed.) - Outdated glass-break sensors
Acoustic glass-break sensors listen for the sound of breaking glass. However, that also leaves them susceptible to false alarms from other sounds of glass breaking (like dropping a dish or watching a loud movie with crashing noises). - Newer dual-tech glass break sensorscombine acoustic and shock-sensing technology so the sensor only goes off if the window actually breaks.
How to prevent it: Contact a home security company to come take a look at your existing system and see if there are any weak points that should be addressed. Source: AckerManSecurity

3 Tips to Prevent Drainage Problems
There are some basic ways to avoid drainage problems and prevent minor problems from developing into major ones. This short post will cover some tips to prevent drainage problems, such as: cleaning, venting and hiring a professional.
Below are 3 tips to prevent drainage problems:
Cleaning
You should clean your drains regularly. A good way of doing this is to fill your sinks with hot water and then pull the plug. The hot water will run down the drains and help to remove any build up that might be there. If you notice that your drains are clearing slower than usual, you can use a commercial drain cleaning product such as those available from supermarkets but follow the instructions exactly and only use them as absolutely needed. Source: HomeImprovementPages
Venting
Venting allows air to enter the pipe as water drains away. Think of what happens when you put a straw into a glass of water. If you cover the open end of the straw with your finger, you prevent air from entering the straw and that creates a vacuum. When you lift straw out of the glass, the water won’t drain from the straw until you lift your finger. When enough air is entering the vent, then water and waste will drain properly. Your toilet, for example, will swirl and empty quickly when it’s flushed. However, if the venting doesn’t let enough air in, then you might hear the sink gurgle when you flush the toilet. Also, remember that venting allows sewer gases to escape and prevents them from building to dangerous levels inside your home. Source: DirectEnergy
Hiring a Professional
Damp, musty smells and wet walls are signs that water is getting into your basement or crawl space. Don’t ignore the problem or attempt a quick-and-dirty solution that won’t correct the situation long-term. Certain temporary fixes can actually make the problem worse.
Luckily, there are do-it-yourself drainage kits available, such as Flo-Well and EZ-Drain, which are usually better performing and easier to install than a traditional, gravel dry well or French drain. However, when dealing with more complex drainage issues, consider hiring a contractor.
“Just be sure to check online ratings and references to ensure you’re going with someone qualified and experienced,” stresses Larsen. Source: HeraldExtra
If you’re thinking about hiring a professional when dealing with your drainage problems, please give us a call or contact us here.

is it healthy to take a Steam Bath Daily?
Is Taking a Steam Bath Daily Healthy?
Numerous medical studies have proved that steam baths provide many health and beauty benefits. A steam bath not only opens pores that allow impurities to leave the body, but it will improve circulation, soothe achy joints and relaxes tired muscles. In a vast majority of cases, how often people use steam baths is a personal matter, but the question still remains, is a daily steam bath healthy? Fortunately, the answer is yes…but.
Yes…But?
In colonial times, Benjamin Franklin took daily steam baths by an open window. He believed that once the steam drew toxins from the body, fresh air would cause them to evaporate. In colonial times, hot baths with lots of steam were the prescribed treatment for many ailments.
Not much has changed from colonial times to the present. There are many people who enjoy the health–and social–benefits offered with steam baths. Fortunately, many medical practitioners endorse this, but with a caveat: watch the duration.
Generally speaking, a daily steam bath taken by a healthy person poses no health risks. The danger that hides in the shadows is when there are extenuating health circumstances that might be affected by those steam baths. For example, people with heart ailments should exercise caution when using steam baths due to the added stress posed by such a regimen. This is not to say that they should not use steam baths, just that they should exercise caution when doing so. The key, in these cases, is held by that patient’s doctor, who should be consulted prior to using a steam bath.
Even for people who are generally heathy, however, the duration of steam baths–not necessarily their frequency–should be kept at 20-30 minutes per day. Doing this every day by a healthy person should pose no health risks.
At Perfectbath.com, we’re not in the business of dispensing medical advice. The only person who should be advising you in such situations is your physician. We can point to the numerous benefits that have been and continue to be enjoyed by those who use steam baths for their health benefits. Further, anyone, healthy or not, should seek the advice of their physician prior to beginning a regimen of regular steam baths.
At Perfectbath.com, we can assist you with any questions you might have about steam baths and steam showers for your home. Contact us today for more information about how you can enjoy the full benefits of steam baths for both your physical and mental health right in your own home.

3 Tips for Selling Your Home During Holidays
Thinking about selling your home on holidays? Fortunately, we’ll give some tips that might help you selling your home during holidays, such as: minimizing holiday decorations, keeping it clean, and pricing it right.
Below are 3 tips for selling your home during holidays:
Minimizing Holiday Decorations
Not everyone has the same love of holiday decorations, and poorly maintained, tacky, or overly religious displays can be a turnoff for potential buyers. Keep the seasonal decorations simple and easy to maintain.
That applies to the outside as well as the inside of your home – avoid browning out the neighborhood with your awesome light display. Source: AJC
Keeping It Clean
Keeping the home free of tracked-in mud, snow, and other debris is even tougher in the winter months, and arguably even more important. Vacuum well and vacuum often.
Don’t neglect the outside. Bare trees may show areas of your home that are usually hidden; make sure these areas are clean and presentable. Deal with any cosmetic maintenance issues such as leaf-filled gutters. Keep your yard raked free of leaves to the extent possible and keep your driveway, sidewalk, and front steps free of snow. Pricing it Right
Buyers at this time of year are typically motivated and not interested in dickering.

4 Guide Steps to Program a Car Alarm Remote
Programming a car alarm remote is a simple task that involves a few steps, including: checking, overriding, programming and testing.
Below are 4 guide steps to program a car alarm remote:
Step 1 – Checking
In order to reprogram a car alarm remote, you need to make sure every door and the hood and trunk are shut. Place the car key in the ignition and close the door. If anything is open, it will chime or a light will come on. Source: DoItYourself
Step 2 – Overriding
- Put your key into your vehicle’s ignition, and turn the key to the “On” position, which is two clicks to the right and one short of starting the car.
- Press the “Override” button on your car alarm remote five times consecutively. The siren will emit a short beep, and the lights on the car will flash on. Source: eHow
Step 3 – Programming
Once all programming is complete, move the valet switch on and then off one final time. Set the car’s ignition to the off position and exit the car, locking it manually. Test the Prestige remote to ensure that all of the buttons programmed properly. If any buttons do not work as expected, start the programming process from the beginning. Source: eBay
Step 4 – Testing
Test every button on your new remote or remotes to make sure they are functioning properly. If anything isn’t working right, recheck the instructions and attempt to reprogram the remotes. After three tries, you should stop and consult a mechanic so you don’t damage the alarm or trigger some sort of safety lock-out feature. Source: Autos

TPE16: Geros produces world’s lightest wooden road bike and it’s as beautiful as it is light!
We get a lot of reasons when when you ask someone why they made a wooden bicycle. It’s beautiful. It’s strong. It has it’s own natural vibration damping. But, it’s light? That’s not typically included among the positives. Which is exactly why German Eslava set out to build the ultimate wooden bike. In addition to […]

Is it good to Use Wood in Bathroom?
Using Wood in the Bathroom
One of the top trends for 2016 bathroom design is wood. Wood in the bathroom is not necessarily a new idea, but for 2016, wood will no longer take a backseat in the bathroom design, and instead it will be a major component in the contemporary bathroom space. Designs range from ninety percent wood that covers the appliances in addition to walls, floors, and ceiling, to a minimal amount of wood that only covers small sections here or there. Traditionally, bathrooms with a wood-theme are normally rustic and country-themed, often giving them a more antique appearance. However, the contemporary wood bathroom does not have an old-style design, but rather uses the wood to enhance the quality of the space and create a luxurious and sauna-like feel to the whole bathroom, giving wood a whole new meaning with the modern edge. We’ll discuss some of the trends and possible design options in the details below.
Max It Out
One of the quickly emerging design trends to feature a bathroom completely surrounded by wood fixtures, including the flooring, walls, and ceiling. Now, we know you might be wondering how this could ever work, but if done right, it’s not such a bad idea and it can give your bathroom an exotic, yet contemporary look. This contemporary design features wood floors with selective wood walls. There is a lovely wood bench by the tub, and the tub also features plated wood on the surface to flawlessly integrate with the rest of the bathroom.
For a slightly more rustic look, this bathroom features two solid walls with wood drawers surrounding the small floating vanity, as well. The hanging light fixtures also add to the rustic feature of this bathroom design, and give it a classy, sophisticated experience. The other half of the wall is white, which allows for the bathroom to seem bigger than it actually is.
This lovely bathroom blends the old with the new, with an even-toned wood color that is slightly between the first two. With a cream-colored laminate floor and white bathtub, the viewer’s eyes are immediately directed to the beautiful woof fixtures within the bathroom. The walls are made from wood, as is the ceiling and the floating vanity. The tubular lighting and swinging towel rack give this bathroom a modern rustic feel and complement the wood design.
Another example of a full-bodied wooded bathroom is this small contemporary design that is fully wood aside from the white tub interior and the vanity countertop. Even the mirror is nearly invisible at first glance, because it simply reflects the wood from the barnyard door interest. This bathroom is also very minimalistic, creating small, nearly sightless hooks in the bathroom for towels, a clear shower curtain, and using only a single, undecorated light bulb for artificial lighting. The sunroof above the shower provides enough light during the day that it doesn’t seem like more intricate lighting is really necessary. Even the tub/shower features only a small, single floating shelf to house the toiletries, leaving the rest of the room to show off.
This conceptual bathroom design features a sleek, contemporary look with extravagance in its spacious layout. Aside from the dividing wall that goes to the shower, this bathroom is almost completely solid wood from the floors and ceiling to the fountain-like whirlpool tub. The greys and browns work very well together, making this bathroom an ideal fit for the modern home.
Finally, this bathroom does adhere to more of a rustic feel, but we couldn’t help but include it because we just like the design so much. Not only does this bathroom feature a full-wooded design, but it we really love the loft-style for the bathroom. The hanging light bulbs, washtub towel holder, vessel sink, and towel stand all work together to give this bathroom a homey, country vibe.
Subtle Undertones
Think an all-wood bathroom is just a little too much for your design ideas? Not a problem. There are still plenty of ways to incorporate wood design sparingly within your bathroom if that’s something you might be interested in doing. Below, is a list of subtle wood designs that we thought were effective, yet not overbearing.
This simple design incorporates a slab of wood for the minimalistic, yet aesthetically pleasing floating vanity. It adds to the trend of wood in the bathroom, but isn’t overly excessive and gets the point across without going overboard.
This bathroom features a solid wood floor and includes a matching vanity sink and tub design that is sand-colored and meant to accentuate the wood floor. The bathroom looks trendy and definitely the wood feature, without letting the wood take over.
Finally, this lovely modern bathroom features wood in its eloquent design, and it is beautiful incorporated to the pristine, white design with marble tile. This bathroom design does a great job of maximizing the 2016 emphasis on wood in the bathroom, and the outcome is stunning.
We hope these designs have given you an example of what the contemporary wood bathroom is all about. What are your thoughts? Is the wood design something that you would consider incorporating into your bathroom remodel, or do you think it should be kept for the more rustic and eccentric designs?

Which Realtor Is Right For You – My 5 Requirements If I Were You
So You’re Hiring a Realtor?
But You’re Not Sure Who To Hire?
When Realtors hire Realtors, Want To Know How They Choose?
There are times when a Realtor would hire another Realtor for their services. Here are some of the reasons:
- They don’t want to sell their own house by themselves because they are not covered under errors & omissions insurance.
- They’re looking to buy or sell a home in another province or country and they have no clue how things are done in that place
I hear a variety of answers when I ask what’s important to people when it comes to their Realtor. They often say the noble things like honest, full disclosure, knowledgeable, helps them get top dollar when selling or helps them get a good deal when buying, but what surprises me is that what they say doesn’t always reflect what they do.
People say they want honesty and ethical but they instruct their Realtor to do unethical things. Or they say they care about knowledgeable, but they choose the Realtor because of the kickback the Realtor offers. So, it’s quite interesting to see that.
Here are my top 5 requirements if I were choosing a Realtor:
- Knowledgeable and willing to educate – they must know what they’re doing and be willing to educate me on the process
- Willing to find the answer, constantly learning – they don’t have to be a know it all, but they have to be willing to go and find the answer
- Ethical and Honesty through Full Disclosure – this is a given, and full disclosure is pretty clear to spot, if the Realtor keeps just saying “sign here, sign there” without explaining anything, then I know…
- Thinks of Building a Long Term Relationship with Me (care about my long term goals) – I want a Realtor who cares about my long term goals.

3 Things Your Kids Must Know about Home Security
When it comes to protecting your kids, we know you will want to have all your bases covered. Luckily, these short post will cover 3 important things your kids must know about home security, including: security passwords, fire prevention and security alarm basics.
Security Passwords
Explain to your kids that you are the only person who should know their passwords. Remind them that giving out their passwords to others (even to friends) can have major ramifications, like someone taking over their social media or email accounts. Source: SafeWise.com
Fire Prevention
This is one of the most important things you can teach your kids. Teach them about fire prevention and how easily a lit flame can start a house fire. Keep them away from lighters and matches at all times. Make sure your child knows that they shouldn’t cook or use the stove or oven unless you’re right there with them. Tell them how easily grease fires can start a house fire. Teach kids to avoid electrical outlets and plugs and tuck away cords as much as possible. Make sure you have a home fire plan which includes dropping to the floor, holding a cloth over the mouth to avoid inhalation and avoiding hot door knobs and exits when this happens. For older kids, you can also teach them how to use an extinguisher. Source: BestHomeSecurityCompanys
Security Alarm Basics
If your home isn’t already equipped with a home security alarm system, it’s advised that you get one as soon as possible. This is especially critical if there are times when your children are unsupervised at home. At this point, there are a number of alarm systems available that are packed with features, even options that make it easier for children to use them. If you plan to purchase an alarm system, hire a certified and fully trained locksmith to install it. Once installed, it’s your job to teach your children exactly how the home alarm system works and how to use it. Source:Technofaq

Does an Infrared Saunas help with Weight Loss
infrared’s fight against obesity
Obesity, we all know it, we all see it, but do we really understand it? Obesity is one of the most silent, yet widespread health epidemics that our generation faces today. In silence, millions of people bear the constant burden of suffering through obesity alone.
According to the American Heart Association, “Most Americans older than 20 are overweight or obese. Over 159 million U.S. adults – or about 69 percent – are overweight or obese.”
It is all around us, yet is never fully addressed in a way that is both healthy and supportive. At Perfectbath.com , we understand that obesity is not the result of poor lifestyle choices, but natural biological factors that are regulating our weight. Working together with your body, far infrared saunas are a healthy, effortless weight loss solution with proven results.
Obesity can often be mistreated with oversimplified answers. As with the emotional complexity that comes with obesity, there are so many solutions for your body beyond exercise and diet. For many individuals, they are unable to achieve weight loss even with continual efforts. So why is it, that one person can lose weight more easily than another? Well, the answer for many people is an internal biological factor; their body is overly acidic.
“ When a system is too acidic, the body produces more insulin than usual. The more insulin that is available, the higher chance the fat will be stored rather than burned as energy, making it difficult for weight loss. To protect itself the body will hold onto the weight” – evolutionhealth
This is why at PerfectBath.com , we believe the most effective way to combat obesity is to treat it at its core with non-invasive infrared heat. 100% ceramic heaters emit temperatures typically between 90 to 140 °F. This is the most effective temperature to set your far infrared sauna because your fat will become water-soluble at 100°F. This is when the heat penetrates deep into your skin to move the water through your body and is eventually extracted from your body, resulting in natural weight loss. The use of the sauna for weight management is great especially for those with mobility issues because it has the effect of not just sweating and water loss but your body actually burns calories in a far infrared sauna by raising your pulse while at the same time lowering your bodies blood pressure making it safe for most anyone to use.
If your body has a naturally high level of acid, the deep energy of far infrared saunas will work internally to push the toxins out of your body. Obesity can be debilitating emotionally and physically. With the relaxing benefits of infrared saunas working with your body instead of against it, feel yourself transform into the person you want to be and the person we always knew you were. View our Saunas to see how you can begin your journey towards wellness today!
